Update, reset, or reinstall Guitar Pro safely

Updating, resetting, and reinstalling solve different classes of problem. Start with the least destructive action that matches the symptom, protect every user-created file first, and test the same reproducible case after each change.

The practical answer

Update first, reset preferences only for likely configuration trouble, and reinstall only when installation files or an unusable build justify it; none of these replaces a backup of your scores.

A step-by-step approach

  1. 1

    Capture the symptom

Write down the exact action, file, application build, operating system, audio device, and expected result.

  2. 2

    Back up user work

Copy scores, templates, exports, presets you can identify, and licence details to a separate location.

  3. 3

    Update first

Use the in-app updater or current official installer, then repeat the original test without other changes.

  4. 4

    Reset only if appropriate

For likely preference or launch corruption, quit Guitar Pro and use the platform-specific official --reset command.

  5. 5

    Reinstall and verify

If installation repair is justified, uninstall, install the current official build and soundbanks, activate, then test before restoring customisation.

Match the repair to the evidence

Use an update for bugs, compatibility changes, and an out-of-date build. Use a preference reset when Guitar Pro fails at launch, behaves incorrectly across files, or the problem began after an application setting changed. Reinstall when the application or soundbanks are incomplete, an update cannot run, or programme files appear damaged.

A file that fails while other scores work is primarily a file-specific case; preserve it and compare with a copy. No sound on one device is primarily an audio configuration case. Escalating straight to reinstall can erase the useful distinction while leaving the score or driver unchanged.

Back up before every escalating action

Copy every .gp project, imported audio file, exported mix, custom template, and other user-created asset to a separate drive or synchronised location. Check the copy by opening representative files. Also retain the Guitar Pro 8 licence number or confirm it appears in the account’s My Licenses area.

Record screenshots of Audio/MIDI choices, stylesheet defaults, custom sounds, and other settings you would struggle to reconstruct. Do not assume uninstalling is destructive, but do not assume it is a backup either. Application repair and protection of personal files are separate responsibilities.

Update with one clean before-and-after test

When Guitar Pro opens, use Help > Check for updates on Windows or Guitar Pro > Check for updates on macOS. If the updater cannot run, download the current official installer. Guitar Pro’s crash guidance recommends the latest installer rather than an old installation DVD.

Restart if the installer or audio driver requests it, then reproduce the original issue before changing preferences, drivers, or the score. Record whether the result changed. One variable at a time turns repair into diagnosis and prevents a temporary success from being attributed to the wrong action.

Reset preferences deliberately

Quit Guitar Pro first. On Windows, Guitar Pro documents running "C:\Program Files\Arobas Music\Guitar Pro 8\GuitarPro.exe" --reset from Command Prompt. On macOS, it documents /Applications/Guitar\ Pro\ 8.app/Contents/MacOS/GuitarPro --reset from Terminal. Paths can differ if the application was installed elsewhere.

A reset is meant to remove problematic preference state. Expect to reselect audio devices and rebuild personal choices; it does not repair a malformed score or reinstall missing soundbanks. Test a blank file and the original case immediately after reset, before restoring custom settings.

Reinstall only what the installer owns

Remove Guitar Pro through the operating system, then use the current official installer with administrator rights where required. Select the soundbanks during installation if RSE playback is needed, activate with the correct Guitar Pro 8 licence, and open a bundled or simple score before copying anything back.

If a clean install works until a particular device, preference, or score returns, that item is valuable evidence. If it fails immediately, gather the operating-system version, Guitar Pro build, audio-device model, steps, screenshots, and an affected file for support. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling without changing or recording the test conditions.

Common questions

An application update should not be used to manage personal files, but protect them independently. Make and verify a separate backup before any repair or operating-system change.
The documented --reset launch removes preference state that can cause startup or configuration trouble. Expect to reconfigure personal choices; it does not repair a damaged score.
Use the normal updater when the app opens. Official crash guidance recommends uninstalling and using the latest installer when a crash or installation problem prevents updating normally.
Run the installer again and make sure the Soundbanks option is selected, then confirm the correct audio output in Audio/MIDI preferences.
