Guitar Pro licence, activation, devices, and reinstalls
A Guitar Pro 8 licence activates the desktop editor on up to five computers at the same time for the licence holder and, for private use, their household. It can be reactivated after a reinstall, but there is no account dashboard that shows or clears the activation count for you.
The practical answer
Register and retain the licence, remove it from a computer before retiring that machine, stay within five simultaneous household computers, and remember that the licence does not include mySongBook catalogue access or the mobile app.
What the Guitar Pro 8 licence activates
The Guitar Pro 8 licence number activates the desktop Guitar Pro 8 application. It is a version-specific code made of three groups of eight characters and begins with an 8; a licence for Guitar Pro 7.6, 6, or 5 will not activate Guitar Pro 8. Retrieve the correct licence from My Licenses in the Guitar Pro account tied to the purchase.
The current official activation policy allows the licence to be activated as many times as needed while no more than five computers are activated simultaneously. For private use, those machines must belong to the user and their family environment in the same household; it is not a five-seat licence for unrelated bandmates, pupils, or employees.
Understand the five-computer limit
Guitar Pro states that there is no interface or account page showing the activation count. You must keep your own record of active machines and remove the licence before installing beyond five. Repeated installation is not itself forbidden; simultaneous active computers are the important limit.
On Windows, open Help > About Guitar Pro 8; on macOS, open Guitar Pro 8 > About Guitar Pro 8, then choose Remove license. Do that before selling, recycling, reimaging, or handing off a computer whenever the old installation still opens.
Prepare for a reinstall or new computer
Register older or reseller-bought licences to your Guitar Pro account so the number remains retrievable. Back up your own .gp files, templates, exports, and any custom assets separately; licence activation does not copy personal scores or settings to the new computer.
Download a current installer from the official account or support page, install the soundbanks when required, and activate with the Guitar Pro 8 number. Open representative scores and verify RSE playback before removing the old installation. If the previous machine is dead and the limit blocks legitimate use, contact official support with purchase and account details.
Plan for first activation and offline work
Complete installation and first activation before travel, and keep the installer and licence details available. Official support documents the activation flow and online account retrieval, but it does not promise that a never-activated machine can be set up fully offline; confirm a disconnected deployment with support instead of assuming it will work.
After activation, ordinary editing and playback of local files do not depend on a mySongBook subscription. Online services, account retrieval, updates, and subscription catalogue access have their own connection requirements. Test any travel computer before leaving rather than discovering an account or soundbank problem on stage.
Keep separate purchases separate
A Guitar Pro licence pays for the desktop editor; it is not a bundle of commercial song files. Official support says the application includes only a few examples and the desktop licence does not provide free access to the mySongBook catalogue. mySongBook uses a separate subscription, while the iOS and Android apps are separate store purchases.
This distinction matters when budgeting for several devices. A laptop can use the desktop licence within its terms, but a tablet app and subscription score library follow their own purchase and account rules. Verify current terms on the official pages before buying because prices, platform offers, and subscription conditions can change.
