What is Guitar Pro? A practical guide for tab players

Guitar Pro is desktop software for reading, playing, editing, and creating interactive tablature and scores. For players, its main advantage over a static tab is timed playback with controls for tempo, looping, metronome, and individual tracks.

The practical answer

Use Guitar Pro when you want to hear a tab, isolate a part, slow it down, and practise it in a repeatable way.

What Guitar Pro actually does

A Guitar Pro file can hold notation, tablature, rhythm, tempo changes, instrument tracks, and playback settings. Opening the file gives you a moving score that can be heard as well as read.

That makes it useful for learning a song, checking the rhythm of a transcription, writing parts, preparing lesson material, or rehearsing with a simplified backing track.

Why tab players use it

The most useful practice feature is control. You can select a difficult passage, repeat it, lower the speed, and bring the tempo back up once the notes are clean. You can also mute or emphasize tracks to focus on rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass, drums, or another part.

A file is still a transcription, not a guarantee of accuracy. Listen critically, compare it with the recording, and treat visitor-submitted tabs as interpretations.

Guitar Pro and mySongBook are different

Guitar Pro is the editor and player installed on your computer. mySongBook is the official licensed score library that works inside Guitar Pro and the mobile apps. A mySongBook subscription provides access to its catalogue, but it is not the same purchase as the desktop software.

Files downloaded from this archive are independent visitor interpretations. They are not mySongBook scores and should be used with respect for the rights of artists, writers, publishers, and labels.

Who gets the most value from it

Guitarists and bassists who learn from tab are the obvious audience, but the software also supports scores for drums, piano, ukulele, and other instruments. Teachers can prepare exercises, songwriters can arrange parts, and bands can share a common rehearsal file.

If you only need to glance at a short tab, a static page may be enough. If timing, arrangement, repetition, and multitrack playback matter, the interactive file is the better tool.

Common questions

You need Guitar Pro or another compatible application to open most files in this archive. Compatibility depends on the file format and the software version.
No. Guitar Pro is the software used to read and edit scores. mySongBook is a separate official library of licensed scores with its own access terms.
Yes. Guitar Pro includes tempo controls, looping, a metronome, countdown, and a speed trainer for gradually increasing the tempo.
