Grace notes, flams, and ornaments in Guitar Pro

Grace notes and ornaments describe how a main note is approached or decorated; they are not ordinary extra beats to squeeze into an already complete bar. Guitar Pro distinguishes grace notes placed before the beat from grace notes played on the beat, while trills, mordents, turns, and drum flams need their own musical judgement.

The practical answer

Choose whether the ornament steals time before or from the main note, keep the structural beat intact, and judge playback as a useful preview rather than an exact performance instruction.

Decide where the ornament gets its time

The most important choice is not the symbol but its relationship to the beat. A grace note before the beat sounds in the approach to the main note, while an on-beat grace note begins at the written beat and shortens the main note. Guitar Pro exposes both commands, so select the one that describes the performance rather than choosing by appearance.

Keep the main note in its correct rhythmic position before adding decoration. If a quarter-note melody already fills the bar, replacing one beat with an eighth note plus another ordinary eighth note changes the written rhythm; attaching a grace note preserves the structural duration and tells the player that the smaller note is ornamental.

Enter grace notes without damaging the bar

Select the main note, then use the grace-note command from the notation palette or the documented keyboard shortcuts: G for grace notes before the beat and Ctrl+Alt+G on Windows or Option+G on macOS for grace notes on the beat. Enter the ornament pitch and check that it appears attached to the intended note, not as an independent beat in another voice.

If the bar turns red, remove any ordinary note or rest added solely to make room for the ornament and inspect every active voice. Grace notation should not require you to overfill the measure. A genuinely measured lead-in belongs in normal notation, with its values counted as part of the bar.

Use the right symbol for the musical job

A crushed grace note, often called an acciaccatura, is normally shown with a slash and played quickly. An appoggiatura is usually more expressive and takes audible time from the main note. A trill alternates rapidly with a neighbouring pitch, while a mordent or turn follows a particular short pitch pattern. Do not use a generic grace note when a dedicated ornament communicates the result more clearly.

For drums, a flam is two near-simultaneous strokes leading to one accented hit. Notate it as a percussion ornament when the destination format supports it, then inspect the drum staff and listen at a slow tempo. Writing two full-value drum notes can move the groove and falsely suggest two equally weighted attacks.

Check tablature and standard notation together

On a fretted-instrument track, standard notation explains the rhythmic role while tablature supplies a playable string and fret. Check both views: an imported or edited grace pitch can land on an awkward string even when the stave looks correct, and a hammer-on or slide may need adding separately to describe the physical connection.

For a multi-note embellishment, proof the order, accidental spelling, string assignment, and tie or slur. Small notation becomes hard to diagnose after a passage has been copied repeatedly, so correct one occurrence and audition it before duplicating the figure.

Know where playback stops being authoritative

Playback can confirm pitch order and a broad before-beat or on-beat effect, but ornament speed, emphasis, swing, and stylistic placement vary by genre and performer. A blues scoop, Baroque appoggiatura, rock drum flam, and fast metal pickup should not be expected to share one automatic interpretation.

Add a short performance note when the intended feel is not obvious, and test the score at both practice and target tempo. If exact timing matters for a produced track, render or record the final performance in a DAW; preserve clear conventional notation in the score rather than distorting note values to chase one synthetic preview.

Common questions

They decorate a structural note rather than acting like an additional ordinary beat. If the bar becomes incomplete or overfull, check for a normal note or rest that was inserted to make artificial space.
A before-beat grace note leads into the written beat; an on-beat grace note begins on that beat and borrows time from the main note. The audible distinction matters more than the small visual difference.
Attach a short grace stroke to the main percussion hit where possible, verify the drum mapping, and listen slowly. Avoid replacing the flam with two equal full-value notes unless that is genuinely the rhythm.
Automatic playback cannot infer every genre-specific timing and accent. Confirm the correct symbol and pitch, then add a performance note or use a recorded performance when exact nuance is essential.
